Metrics and Definitions

First Generation Students

(source: Kay Thomas, UT Development)

Rules:

·         First Generation includes students whose parent’s highest education is “High School Equivalent” (or less)

·         First Generation includes students whose parent’s highest education is “Some College”

·         First Generation includes students whose parent’s highest education is “Associate’s Degree”

·         If one parent is “Unknown” then the student is placed based on known parent’s education level

·         If both parents are “Unknown” then student is NOT First Generation; label "unknown"

The reason “unknown” is NOT is because our current Apply Texas applications does not differentiate between someone who checks “unknown” and those that leave it blank.   Blanks are more likely not to be first generation.

Ethnicity

(Source:https://data.utsystem.edu/raceethnicity_defns)

Race/ethnicity categories were revised to include a two-question format:

  1. ethnicity (Hispanic or non-Hispanic); and
  2. race (African American, White, Asian American, Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, Native American), which are reported for non-Hispanics only.

Dashboard Race & Ethnicity Groupings

  • White
  • African American (includes 'Multi-Racial, including African American' category)
  • Hispanic
  • Asian (includes 'Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander' category)
  • International
  • Other Races (includes 'American Indian or Alaskan Native'; 'Multi-Racial, excluding African-Americans'; and Unknown categories)

Method:

  1. Count all cases where Hispanic is listed as first choice as Hispanic. Do not count any other ethnicity or race listed for the same case.
  2. Count all instances of all other ethnicity categories including Hispanic.
