Responsibility and Respect

What is a preceptor and how do I become one?

PLUS Preceptor Job Functions

The preceptor acts as a study group facilitator and communicates with the professor, senior preceptor, and classmates to promote effective learning.

  • Facilitate effective study groups:
    • Show up to your assigned study group on time. Seriously. 5 minutes early is even better.
    • Treat classmates who attend your study group with courtesy and respect. In particular, avoid saying something is “easy” – it might be for you, but not for others.
    • Be open to change and experimentation. But follow the agenda unless there’s a reason to diverge.
    • Understand that you may not know all the answers, nor are you expected to. Refer attendees to written resources, your professor, or the TA in cases where nobody in the group can answer a question. You can also offer to ask the professor yourself and email the information out to the group later.
  • Participate in all areas as a student and a preceptor to the best of your abilities:
    • Attend preceptor training.
    • Attend class and discussion sections.
    • Attend weekly planning meetings with professor.
    • Generally keep up with the course by completing assignments on time, which helps you be prepared for study groups.
    • Use PLUS time to study, regardless of the number of attendees.
  • Communicate regularly with your senior preceptor and professor:
    • Regularly check your email for updates about study groups, and respond to email messages from your senior preceptor.
    • Inform both your professor and senior preceptor when you or other students have difficulty with the course material.
    • Regularly communicate with your senior preceptor and professor about how the study groups are going.
  • Take attendance, and send it to PLUS within 24 hours. A template will be provided. If you were there, you also attended, so include yourself!
  • Like PLUS on Facebook: www.facebook.com/PLUSatUT and follow us on Twitter @PLUSatUT
  • Data related to your participation in PLUS may be used for research purposes. You will not be individually identifiable.
  • Your preceptorship can be terminated either by you or by your professor at any time if you are not fulfilling your preceptor commitments. Termination will not affect your course grade.

I agree to participate in the PLUS Program as a preceptor during this upcoming semester.
