Team 21 - Introduction and Background

This project was inspired by the fictional superhero Tony Stark’s Iron Man. Throughout the films, his suit undergoes many iterations as his technology advances. His helmet specifically, is a titanium-gold alloy with many moving pieces that create his helmet and faceplate. The opening and closing of his faceplate have been an important element of his suit and is an iconic film element. His faceplate opens with a simple but rugged hinge mechanism that is located at the top of the helmet. However, we wanted to recreate his faceplate opening with a series of four bars and compound gears that open the faceplate in 4 parts, with the lower parts moving horizontally and the upper parts moving vertically instead of the whole plate moving upwards.
