Substantial Writing Component Guidelines

To be certified as having a substantial writing component, a College of Communication course must satisfy the following minimum criteria:

• Three writing activities per semester (exclusive of in-class quizzes and examinations);
• At least 16 total pages (typewritten, double-spaced) of writing, or about 4,000 words;
• Timely and detailed critiques following each writing activity; and
• Grading whereby the quality of the student's writing is an important component of the student's final course grade.
