- From last conversation at the end of the year, we are collectively moving the page and would like to move the focus from just wikidata (though wikidata will probably still be present)

Connecting with DS and DH communities on campus/locally/regionally | Melanie & All | - Idea is to connect with local DS and DH communities to identify opportunities for potential collaboration, opportunities to raise awareness of our group members' linked data projects, and better understand LD interest in these communities
- Melanie has invited Alyssa Guzman & Albert Palacios to join us at February meeting to open this conversation. Still waiting to hear from them
- What are our desired outcomes from initiating this conversation?
- Katie – learning more about other wikidata, or LOD in general project on campus that they might be aware of given their involvement on the DH community
- Paloma – let them know what we have done so far and where our interests lay at, so there is an awareness about our group on the DH community
- Michael – the geodata working group has met recently with both of them to draw from their connection to the DH community and brainstorm the potential of connecting all the different data resources that are related to each other, but that exists in different platform/portals. That could be a goal of potential interest for this group too.
- Melanie – Allyssa maintains a libGuide about DH that is an excellent resource. The libGuide includes a directory of UT DH projects across campus. Is there a space for our own projects there? Could we use that libGuide as an example?
- There are also a couple of UT lists related to DH, both managed by Allyssa. Katie used to be very involved in one of the groups. They used to have regular meetings on campus, but it has been a long time ever since. Currently the lists are mostly used to make announcements or promote projects/events. Is there any way we could leverage these lists?
- Katie – it is worth thinking also about what member's of this group have the capacity to do. There is a chance that the conversation gravitates towards participation in workshops, etc... but is that something we are looking to get into? Or, do we have the capacity to support other folk's LOD projects?
- Need to think also about the audience of this group. Are we looking for the group to grow with member from all over campus? Is that one of the goals to reach out to the DH community? If we want to update our target audience, we will need to fine tune our scope documentation. Right now it is "...This informal learning discussion group aims to attract current library and archival staff at the University of Texas at Austin in particular those currently working with digital libraries or digital archival collections."
- Paloma – Like the idea of teaching workshops as a way of raising awareness of the potential of wikidata. Those workshops could potentially lead to wikidata edit-a-thons. We have not discussed deliverables for this group, but a workshop might be a good deliverable. A long time ago there was a discussion regarding UT Libraries hosting a one-day-event to engage the campus community focused in Wikidata, but that proposal never get anyway because there was a sense that there was not really an audience in campus for such event. Starting with with workshops and edit-a-thons might be the seed for such an event sometime in the future. Is this something we would be interested in pursuing?
- Do we have the capacity to establish ourselves as the go to place for linked data projects on campus? Need to be mindful of people's capacities and also need to be smart about managing campus expectations. Need to make sure that it does not come off as we want to expand the library services to include LOD with us being the ones assigned to it
- Katie – this is a great group for learning together, and would like that spirit to continue. Don't feel confident enough to be the LOD person to go to, or teach a workshop
- Michael – Workflows can be a great opportunity to gather information with the use of surveys. Could be useful to learn more about the awareness of LOD on campus. Some of these workshops are very well attended (can get up to 150 participants). There is the "Data and Donuts" (lead by Michael) and the "DH workshops" series (lead by Allyssa). A wikidata workshop might fit pretty nicely in any of those. We could also manage the expectations of participants with the wording of the workshop description. It is ok to say that we are not experts and that what we are about to show is just the result of our own testing with the tool.
- Brittney – we could also reframe it as an "open house" so it is not as compromising
- Michael – that is a good idea, and we could still use the Data and Donuts or DH workshops as platforms to support an event like that
- Melanie – Teaching about a topic can be a great opportunity to learn more about the topic. We could consider both.
- Katie – share slides of Adriana Casarez workshop on openRefine as an example of something doable
- Melanie – summary of desired outcomes: Connect and crosspollinate with campus community, without defining our role as the go to for LD projects. We don't want to establish ourselves as experts, but focus on LOD exploration and in learning from each other.
- Potential questions for them (intention to share the questions in advance):
- Ideas for raising visibility of wikidata projects?
- Potential of Wikidata edit-a-thons?
- Landscape of the communities they are engaged with?
- Aware of other wikidata or linked data related projects around campus?

- Agenda and format of meeting
- Start by giving a brief background of what we have been working on, this will show them also our comfort level with our own projects.
- Very brief presentations of all the projects by members of the group (geospatial and wikidata data, Architecture archival entities, BIBFRAME and Sinopia, HRC archival and library entities)
- Action item → Melanie and Paloma will draft an agenda, list of questions and short term goals and share it with the group

Other topics for Spring 2022 | All | - How LD projects fit on our daily work?
- This is a topic that we are always going to keep in mind, no matter what we focus on, since it is one of the main goals of the group members
- Managing local authorities, with wikidata/wikibase or otherwise
- There is still a lot of interest in this topic so it will be worth exploring
- Grant opportunities
- Will keep in the backburner. There is a chance that as we discuss on local authorities management we end up coming up with the seed for a grant. It can be all interconnected. As it is right now, the conversation around local authorities management tight very nicelly with another existing grant (Mellon grant to develop an integrated portal to different partner's collections on campus)
- Figure out how to connect related data resources that exist in different platforms and systems (Michael)
- This could also be tighten to our focus on local authorities management. Use the authorities for linking the resources?
- Challenge: The systems where these resources live are managed library IT, so we cannot work directly with the back end
- With the DAMS being migrated to Islandora 8, and that system having RDF management capabilities, it could serve for UT libraries IT staff to build capacity on management of linked data systems
- Having a libGuide to use these resources could be an early stage approach
- A goal for this group could be to start thinking how things link together and how to form those relationships
