How to Create a Bag Using Bagger

Instructions on how to create a bag to securely transfer files to the UT Libraries Digital Stewardship unit for digital preservation using Bagger from the Library of Congress.

  1. Open the Bagger application. A Terminal window running java will pop-up followed by the blue green Bagger screen and then the application's home screen.

  2. Select Create New Bag

  3. Select the profile related to the project. If a profile for the specific project is not listed, contact UT Libraries Digital Stewardship unit to have one created.

  4. Once the Bag Info has been updated with the profile information locate the External-Identifier field. The UUID for the bag will need to go here. Copy and paste the UUID into this field. Do not use the same UUID more than once.

  5. Next, in the Payload window click the green plus sign icon to add files to the bag.

  6. Locate and select the desired directory/files that need to be bagged.

  7. The data folder will now contain the items that will be bagged. Expand all folders to view contents. If any .DS_Store files are present delete these items. They are added by the OS and will cause an error when the bag is being verified.

The console space lets you keep track of the changes that have been made to a bag.

  8. Select Save Bag As... click on Browse and save the bag in the ready_to_vault folder for the project. Use the same UUID entered in the External-Identifier field as the File Name

  9. Change both the Tag Manifest Algorithm and the Payload Manifest Algorithm to sha256. This is the preferred checksum algorithm. Select OK. Depending on the size of the bag's contents this could take a few minutes.

    Remember...

Once a bag has been saved opening it will modify the contents. If for whatever reason something needs to be changed or added, delete the bag and start over.

  10. Once the bag is saved select Validate Bag. If nothing has been lost or added in the transfer and the checksums match then the Validation successful message box will appear.
