Repurpose or Surplus Computing Devices
Repurposing Devices
Computers that have been used by UT faculty or staff are likely to contain university data and require additional support from the IT group before it can be repurposed.
If a computer is being repurposed for a new employee or new use, it must be re-imaged with a fresh operating system, encrypted, and have security tools implemented. You can request this be done by submitting a service request to help@ece.utexas.edu
Surplus Old Devices
Computers that are being sent to surplus must have their hard drives removed and brought to the ITS Helpdesk at the Flawn Academic Center (FAC). See http://www.utexas.edu/its/hddestruct/ for more information.
The IT group will coordinate with the department's inventory team to process the device(s) for surplus. Â If the hard drives have not yet been removed, the IT group will proceed to do so, and schedule the drives to be delivered to the FAC.
Other Media
In addition to computers, any computer such as floppy disks, tapes and CD's should be carefully reviewed before they are disposed.  If there is any possibility that it ever contained Category 1 data, or if there is any doubt or concern, then the media should be brought to the FAC for destruction.
