Faculty Editorial Support
Proposal Submission Link:Â https://utexas.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_bpctht39qBqChRIÂ Â
Proposal Timeline: TBD
Guidelines:Â
- College of Education faculty are well-known scholars in their field, and as such, are often sought out as editors or associate editors of scholarly journals. These roles qualify as scholarly service to the discipline and are important to maintaining high-quality research contributions to academic disciplines. Further, the reputation of The University, the COE, and each Department are enhanced when our faculty take on such roles.
- As such, the COE intends to provide support for faculty in these roles, where possible. Many journals provide support, and in these cases, additional support from the departments and college is likely not needed. When support is not provided from the journal, faculty most often request support in the form of course releases and GRA support.
- Many faculty assume some sort of editorial role, and the departments and college are not able to provide support for all faculty. A limited number of two slots per department is available for course releases and/or GRAs to be provided to faculty assuming editorial roles.
- Decisions will be made by department chairs, based on an initial survey (see below) completed by the faculty that provides relevant information about the workload, the role the faculty plays, and the journal. Priorities for decision-making include:
- Faculty who are in their first term as editors
- Faculty in roles such as Editor-in-Chief or Associate Editor
- Faculty in editorial roles with top-tier (as defined by the department and discipline) research journals and/or editorial work that will highlight/promote UT’s influence and impact in the field.
Support:Â Â
Support may include a course release or GRA Support:
- Each department can allocate up to two GRA positions (up to 10 hours each) to support editorial work per year, depending on available funding. The college will contribute an amount equivalent to a 10-hr GRA per year, at the COE minimum GRA doctoral rate, including tuition. Unspent funds will be swept at the end of each year.
- To request these funds, departments should send an email to Beth Maloch requesting the funds, including information about faculty members, journals, and assigned GRA. The College will transfer the necessary funds to the department. In exceptional cases, departments may choose to fund additional requests using departmental funds.
- Departments may provide course releases to faculty while also working to maintain the instructional integrity/mission of the department. These course releases should be for elective or non-essential courses to reduce the financial burden on departments.
- Initial support for faculty would cover one year with an option for renewing for up to two additional years.
