Duo (Two-Factor Authentication)
In 2014, UT Austin implemented a two-factor authentication (2FA) process for certain campus systems and financial applications. This process adds a layer of security by requiring an extra step in the authentication procedures of sensitive systems. Such extra step demands the user, after having authenticated with credentials (UT EID and password), to grant access to the system through a personal mobile device (phone or tablet) that the user previously configured. Therefore, this 2FA service strengthens security by requiring two forms of identity verification: something the user should know (credentials), and something the user should have (mobile device).
Duo is the university's tool for 2FA, this tool offers a mobile app that facilitates the 2FA process by allowing the user to receive Duo requests via notifications through the app, in addition to other options as a phone call or be provided with a temporary passcode.
