Overview
An MD program coupled with an MSE program in Biomedical Engineering will produce physicians who are able to practice medicine and biomedical research with the quantitative analytical skills of an engineer. The current trend nationally amongst medical students is to advance their medical education by pursuing master’s degrees in related fields, such as biomedical engineering, through dual-degree program arrangements. Students will develop skills and competencies in biomedical imaging and instrumentation, biomaterials, biomolecular engineering, computational bioengineering and biomechanics.
An undergraduate degree in engineering is not required to participate in this program.

Degree Format
The MSE degree program is typically delivered in an in-person format.
Coursework Requirements
30 credit hours are required for the degree, of which 18 are taken during the fall and spring semesters of the students' third year. 12 credits are waived based on shared coursework with the MD degree (the Structure & Function and Mechanisms of Disease courses).
Students may choose to apply to and participate in the Clinical Innovation and Design program as a component of the Master of Science in Engineering (MSE) in Biomedical Engineering degree. Students may earn a distinction or a master's degree, but not both. Students who choose to participate in Clinical Innovation and Design as a component of the MSE will be awarded only a master's degree and not a distinction.

Application Instructions
At this time, this program does not have a limit on the number of students that can apply or be admitted.
This program is only for third-year Dell Medical School students who are accepted into the MSE dual degree program. In order to apply for the MD/MSE dual degree program, students must be in good academic standing at Dell Medical School.
The application for admission opens in August each year with an application deadline of December 1. Application materials required include:
graduate application for admission
3 letters of recommendation
structured statement of purpose
official transcripts
GRE scores are not used in the BME application process
Orientation
This program typically holds a one-day orientation the week before UT Austin classes start. When known, the date will be listed in the DMS MS3 Academic calendar.
