Composite Frame Initial Testing Plan
Factors to consider
Core Material
Aluminum Honeycomb
Nomex Honeycomb
Face sheet materials
4 ply either side, should we use Kevlar or Fiberglass for inner layer (galvanic)
In areas 500mm from driver, do we want to add more layers when adding the Kevlar or remove some layers
Adhesive
Co-bond using West Systems
Co-bond using Lam 127
Secondary bond using West Systems
Secondary bond using Lam 127
Secondary bond using Araldite
Secondary bond using paste epoxy
Filler materials
This would be for secondary bond epoxies, especially paste epoxies, in order to get ideal bond thickness (4-8 thou)
This has the potential to strengthen our panels but I have no research to back this up (it just makes sense kinda… right?) and it would have to be completely empirical
Kevlar fiber interfacial toughening (Kevlar Fiber interfacial toughening)
First test plans
Test all with fiber glass as inner layer first, then kevlar
Volume fraction around 55%(will test)
For now, all tests will be 3 ply cf, Kevlar/fiber glass, core, kevlar/fiberglass, 3 ply cf
Orientation will be 0, 45, -45, 90
Nomex core test group:
Control: co-bond w/ West Systems or Lam 127
Config 2: secondary bond w/ West Systems or Lam 127
Config 3: secondary bond w/ araldite
Config 4: secondary bond w/ paste epoxy
Honeycomb properties
cell size: 3/16 inch
density: 6 lb/ft^3
thickness: 20 mm
Aluminum test group:
Control: co-bond w/ West Systems or Lam 127
Config 2: secondary bond w/ West Systems or Lam 127
Config 3: secondary bond w/ araldite
Config 4: secondary bond w/ paste epoxy
Honeycomb properties
cell size: 1/2 inch
density: 0.000752 - 0.0994 lb/in³
thickness: 3/4 inch
