1. Project Introduction
For this project, I have constructed a paper mechanism from the book Karakuri – How to Make Paper Models That Move by Keisuke Saka. This model, named “Ready to Fly”, is made entirely out of paper and cardboard and when finished creates a paper penguin that flaps its wings and moves up and down. This mechanism is made up of two snail cams with a flat-faced follower that makes the penguin rise up and down and also flap its wings. A demonstration of the finished product is shown below in the video. The following pages will detail the analysis of this mechanism, with background information on cams, and motion diagrams of the penguin.
