Lost & Found

If a student reports that they have lost an item:

  1. Ask the student to describe what they lost, when, and where.
  2. Check the Lost & Found Log/cabinet in DIT for the item. If you need further description of the item from the person, please ask.
  3. If you find their item, have the student sign under "Claimant Signature and Printed Name". Initial with your initials under "Released by" and enter "Release Date".
  4. If you cannot find their item, direct them to check with the Jester West Front Desk and to submit a "Lost & Found" report with UT PD - https://police.utexas.edu/lostandfound/.
    1. Add the item that could not be found to the list in the Lost & Found cabinet.

If a found item is brought to our DIT desk:

  1. Ask the person dropping it off to describe where they found it and when.
  2. Add the item that was found to the Log in the Lost & Found cabinet.

If a found item is brought to our Main front desk, please take the item down to DIT and log the item.

** If the found item has any available contact information, search the student in the UT Directory and send them an email from the DIT Outlook account (be sure to cc Admin). Use the following template:

Hello (name)

Your (describe item) was found on (date) in Sanger’s (specific area if known, ex: Chemistry Drop-in, Appointment Tutoring) area.

You can pick up your item in Sanger’s DIT office located on the 3rd floor of Jester, room A315 at the front desk. We are open M-TH Noon-6pm. Please pick up your belongings ASAP. If you have any questions, call us at (512) 475-8719.

 Thank you,

 DIT Front Desk

*** If the found item is valuable (wallet, phone, purse, laptop, etc), these items should be brought to the main office so Admin can securely store them and check the persons ID/have them describe the item before returning it. If the main office is closed, email Admin and they will come collect the item in the morning.

Lost & Found Inventory / Clean-out - The Week of the Last Class Day

At the end of each semester, SLC takes inventory of remaining Found items, and distributes them to the appropriate places (UT PD, etc.). If the item is clothing, notebooks or water bottles, they must be put together in one pile for Trash to Treasure. If there are items in this group, contact Admin to schedule a pick-up with the Trash to Treasure team (trashtotreasure@utenvironment.org). For all remaining items, a Transport List needs to be filled out with each item. The list template can be found here - https://police.utexas.edu/lostandfound/transport_list_9-2010.pdf. Once the list is ready, contact Admin to schedule a pick-up with UTPD (1-4441, Option 6).
