Object Geography

Because of the Embark legacy data, we are maintaining the redundant practice of adding Nationality in both the object record and the Artist’s constituent record.

Add Nationality and/or Place Made in the Record Hierarchy column at the left of the screen. Select “Geography” and click the blue action button to add new geography records. Select either Nationality or Place Made as the Geography Type, then select the appropriate Continent/Region before entering the Country level.

Place Made: object related, based on artist’s active location at time of work’s creation, noun form (Mexico)

Nationality: links the artist’s nationality to be searchable at object level, adverb form, (Mexican)

Culture: link’s the artist’s culture to be searchable at object level (Maya), this is especially relevant for unknown makers

Possible Place Made: eliminates fields with (?)

Possible Nationality: eliminates fields with (?)

For Nationality, enter Continent, Country, and Cultural Region (LAA).

For Place Made, enter Continent, Country (and City, State if desired)

For Unknown Artists, Place Made to the most local level is recommended. Add Culture or Nationality if known. (Undetermined may be added to the Country field if there is no information)

Be sure to use adjective forms for Nationality and proper nouns for Place Made. Both options are available because it is a combined list for both geography types.

Central America Inclusions:

• Costa Rica
• Guatemala
• Honduras
• Panama
• Nicaragua

Cultural Regions

Latin American should be entered only in Cultural Region, NOT Continent. Select either North or South America. (Correcting a legacy standard of Latin America as a Continent)

Please make a request to the database manager to designate any other cultural regions.
