VPN - how to connect/disconnect

Original source: Created by Brittany P Boyer

This page describes the process of connecting to/disconnecting from the SSB VPN, installing the software (if necessary), as well as background information answering questions like "what is VPN?" and "when do I need VPN?".

Connecting to the SSB VPN

Note: This process requires two factor authentication via University of Texas DUO. If you do not have DUO set up, go here first.

  1. Launch the Cisco Secure Client application by either:

  • clicking the taskbar arrow (1) and then the Cisco Secure Client icon (2) or

  • searching for “Cisco Secure Client” from the task bar search

  1. Make sure you have the correct server (vpn.utexas.edu/vpn-uhcs) selected and then click Connect

When connecting for the first time with the Cisco Secure Client you may need to manually add or change the server name. Even if the server connection string says vpn.utexas.edu you must add /vpn-uhcs so it reads “vpn.utexas.edu/vpn-uhcs”, otherwise you will not have access to all resources in our network spaces.

  1. In the next window, sign in with your EID and your EID password:

4. The VPN should now connect, and you should see the following message:

Disconnecting from the VPN

  1. Open the VPN (Cisco Secure Client) software

  2. Click Disconnect.

Installing the VPN Software (Cisco Secure Client)

If you have a computer which was issued to you by HITS, you should already have this software installed.

If your UHS / CMHC computer appears to not have the software, please submit a HITS Request or call HITS at 512.475.8311.

More information about VPN (Virtual Private Network)

  • What is VPN?

For security reasons, there are certain things (such as connecting to services like PNC) which can only be done when physically connected to our network. A VPN, or Virtual Private Network, allows your computer to behave as if it is connected to our network here in SSB, even when you are physically somewhere else. In other words, you are connecting to our Private Network, but doing so Virtually.

  • When do I need to connect to VPN?

When you are on any network other than the wired network in areas of SSB occupied by UHS / CMHC / LWC, you will need to connect to VPN to access certain services. This includes times when you are connected to the wireless network in SSB. When not connected to the wired network in SSB during the majority or full course of the workday you should be connected to the VPN as much of the workday as possible. For example if you work Monday and Friday from home you should connect to the VPN as much of the workday from home as possible.

  • What services require VPN?

    • Point and Click (Web/Desktop)

    • UHS / CMHC Remote Server connections

    • Accessing the mainframe

    • Computer management and updates
