Overview of Spring ResearchNicole Perry

Children regulate their emotions synchronously with caregivers, when they're more in-tuned, stronger regulatory skills develop.

All research has been done involving parents. Interested in teacher-child relationship.

Physiological synchronousy between teachers and children - first study of its kind!

Reach out to Nicole during the study with questions if you have them.

What's Happening

  • Kindergarten is excluded
  • All ages 2-4
  • Feb 1 through Apr 13
  • Wearing sensors during a series of lab tasks
    • Reading a book
    • Walking along a maze marked with tape on the floor
    • Completing two problem solving tasks
  • Questionnaires

Notes

  • Children will be pulled with preferred teacher, do a 'warm-up' tasks. RA will come in a hookup electrodes. Will instruct teacher on where to put electrodes, teacher will then assist child in putting electrodes on. Electrodes will go under collarbones and under rib. Teacher then wears them too. Teacher will put them on first, then the child. Pack will be in battery pack in fanny pack that the child is wearing. (30 minutes start to finish)
    • Then, free play task (2-3 minutes). Then cleanup toys. Then read them a book, probably Goodnight Goodnight Construction Site (boring book), resting heart rate collection for teacher and child.
    • Then, walk very boring maze. To show RSA increases with movement (3 min).
    • Then, engage in a problem solving task. There are 2 problem solving tasks.
      • Puzzle box (1st task) - teacher will be doing survey. Child will do the task on their own. It will be challenging and cause frustration for the child. Then RA will come in a give them a tool to be able to solve the problem. The treat is a small stuffed animal. Children will get a book at the end of the study. Families get $5 gift card for doing questionnaires.
      • Tube task (2nd task) - Basic for toddlers, more complex for older children. In this task, teachers will be able to verbally scaffold children when solving the problem.
    • Teachers and GAs will sit down and discuss who is the preferred caregiver. Teachers and GAs will sign consent forms as well. 3 teacher questionnaires per child for preferred caregiver. There will also be observations of the child by RAs during circle time and small group.
    • Ideally all questionnaires are done prior to the next child. As soon as capable.
    • Four pull blocks: 930-1030, 1030-1130, 145-245, 245-345
    • Goal is to get 85 kids run
