A.1 Introduction

These General Promotion and Tenure Guidelines describe the promotion process, preparation of materials, and management of dossiers for the promotion of tenured and tenure-track faculty members at UT Austin, excluding faculty members whose primary academic appointment is in the Dell Medical School (except as noted in Sections B.1 and D.4).

The promotion process aims to provide a thorough and objective review of the substance and merits of each faculty member’s case.

The review must be sufficient in its depth and character to support a decision that is in the best interest of the University, whatever the decision reached.

The evaluation process comprises independent reviews at multiple levels (Section A.2).  Therefore, review recommendations at one level do not dictate the outcome at a subsequent level.

  • The recommendations at each level should reflect the professional, evidence- and experience-based judgement of each faculty member or administrator.

Like all employment decisions at the University, no recommendations will be positively or negatively influenced by the candidate’s race, color, religion, national origin, sex (including pregnancy), age, disability, citizenship, veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression.
