G.8 Mentoring | (a) BC/EC Statement
The BC/EC must provide a statement that addresses the candidate’s contributions to mentoring.
The names and signatures of the members of the BC/EC who prepared the statement must be included.
The assessment should:
- Reflect familiarity with the candidate’s mentoring activities. Identify areas of distinction and potential weaknesses in performance, contributions, and trajectory related to mentoring.
Contextualize the candidate’s formal mentoring activities with respect to the norms of the field for their rank. Consider the following areas:- Supervision of graduate students, including number of theses and dissertations supervised, membership on graduate student committees, engagement of undergraduates in research.
- Engagement of undergraduate students in research activities or supervision of an undergraduate honors thesis.
- Supervision of postdoctoral researchers.
- Compare the level of financial support provided to graduate students compared with the norms of the field.
- First placement of graduate students and postdoctoral researchers mentored by the candidate.
- Service as a faculty advisor to official University student organizations.
Contextualize the candidate’s informal mentoring activities with respect to the norms of the field for their rank. Consider the following areas:- Coaching informal groups of students in competitions and/or community service-based activities.
- Efforts to improve student outcomes at any level.
- Engagement in outreach activities to K-12 students or undergraduates to build pipelines of potential students.
- Sharing best practices to promote faculty development.
- Career counseling for students and writing letters of recommendation for admission to graduate school or for external awards.
Describe and evaluate any external funding that the candidate has secured to support mentoring activities.
Contextualize any awards, grants, honors, and/or other recognition the candidate received for mentoring excellence.
