Responsibility and Respect

Purposes of preceptor training

A room like NOA 1.124 is good for this. Bring: video, attendance sign-in list(s), blank copies of the preceptor job agreement for preceptors to sign.

Planning for Preceptor training:

*food.  estimate 6pple/pizza.  pepperoni and cheese, veggie.  (avoid sausage)

start with an engagement activity (people bingo?)

job description logistics, practice group start up (hitting introductions, purpose, expectations, agenda, etc...), attendance, when to cancel a study group.  what to expect- being observed twice.  go through observation rubric and what each looks like, and intention of observations is not to judge but to provide specific feedback to group and improve facilitation skills.

solicit questions from preceptors-->SP panel

allow plenty of time for videos.  show bad (pause, preceptors brainstorm what *things contributed to it going well, *what went wrong), better (pause, how improve), best (preceptors come up with and talk out)

worst case scenario preceptor brainstorm, they write on board, SPs circulate and write down suggestions.  debrief on board work.

divide preceptors up to act out, bad, better, ask SP's to try to impromptu improve it

then bridge to preceptors acting out bad, better, tap other preceptors to impromptu improve it

The primary purposes of preceptor training are to:
1. Clarify role and expectations.
2. Get preceptors excited and confident about leading!!

Definitely do these activities:
Review job description (i.e., Preceptor Agreement) by reading through and discussing each point. Give preceptors the opportunity to ask questions, let SPs answer those questions as much as possible. Have preceptors sign and date the agreement. No more than 20 minutes on this part.
Practice "room is locked" phone call.
Practice "how to start a study group."
Analyze examples of good and bad study group events through the video ("when did this study group go wrong?" "what could you do at that key moment?").
Practice speaking in front of the group with the "name wave."
